Pets are a normal part of most
Australians' lives.
It is easy to take for granted the
role of pets in our society. More than eight out of ten Australians have
owned a pet at some stage of their lives. Almost two thirds of Australian
households currently own pets. In fact, Australia has one of the highest
rates of pet ownership in the world. Quite simply, pets are part of life.

Pets are good for our health
Pets give pleasure, they teach responsibility,
tehy love and are loved in return, their owners are healthier amd happier
than non-owners. If a new drug supplied the same benefits that pets provide
it would be hailed as a medical miracle.

The pet care industry is one of
the largest industries in Australia
The overwhelming popularity of companion animal ownership
has created one of the largest industries in Australia, contributing around
$3.3 billion to the Australian economy annually and employing over 37,000
people.
Despite the proven benefits of
pet ownership, it's becoming more difficult to own pets
In some quarters there is a growing attitude that perts
are not a valid and legitimate part of life, this perception is compromising
our ability to own pets. Urban consolidation, environmental concerns,
changing lifestyles and government legislation are creating an environment
in which pet ownership is underthreat.
Because of the considerable benefits pet ownership brings to individuals,
the community and the economy, serious attention should be given to the
issues limiting pet ownership.
The needs of pets, pet owners and non-pet owners are all legitimate.
These needs must be appreciated and integrated with society and the environment
to ensure that people and pets live harmoniously.
