Fox Terrier (Smooth)

Wherever the English language is spoken, and even in places where it isn't, you will find the ubiquitous Fox Terrier.

Long known for being the "working man's" favourite, the Smooth Fox Terrier is an ancient British breed designed for the sport of fox hunting. Expected to work either above or below the ground, he would have to drive the fox from the hole or drain in which it had taken refuge when pursued by the hounds, and dispatch it.

Although primarily a pet these days, the Fox Terrier still retains the old fire and hunting instinct of his forebears. A very basic old-fashioned grass roots type terrier, the "Foxie" as he is affectionately known, is a little power packet of a dog, embodying bone and strength in a small compass. Speed and endurance, coupled with symmetry and balance, combine to give the Fox Terrier his functional conformation.

He loves exercise and is always ready for a game, whether just a romp on the lawn or the more serious business of dispensing with the neighbouring rats. Tenacious and tireless the "Foxie" is a fast mover with lightning-quick reactions.

His activity level means that he is often unsuitable for young children. Clean and well mannered in the house, the Fox Terrier is a very alert dog and ever ready to give the alarm when he feels intrusion of some kind is imminent, in which case he becomes one of the best possible guard dogs.
