A GUIDE TO JUDGING
Essentially the pet show should be full of fun. As a judge, it is part of your role to ensure that each child feels that are an important part of the proceedings. Therefor it is necessary to view each participant. It is also importnat that you stay withing the established timeframe. This must include tiem at the end of each section for the judges to confer. Most of the categoris in the pet show are designed not only to allow the participants to enjoy theri pets, but also to increae their understanding of the repsonsibilities associated with pet ownership. As a judge you have an excellent opportunity for effectively promoting the importance of correct grooming, feeding and training.
PUPPIES AND DOGS Best Kept The puppies awarded prizes in this section should have a clean and well brushed coat, clean eyes and ears and should be well fed, but not overweight. The owner should show pride and affection for their pet. Remember not to be influenced by the cuteness of the animal and that you are not judging pedigrees.
Best Mannered This prize should be given to a dog who is well behaved and suitably controlled by its owner. It is important to show the participants that a well mannered dog is a joy to own.
Dog with the Waggliest Tail Again, the dog must be clean and obedient but, most importantly, it must wag its tail in a happy manner.
KITTENS AND CATS Best Kept The kittens and cats awarded prizes in this section should have a shiny well brushed coat with no loose fur or tangles and clean eyes and ears..
Best Groomed The cats in this category should be judged on clean appearance and condition.
BIRDS Best Kept This prize should be given to the bird that is in a clean cage, containing fresh drinking water. The bird should have clean, clear eyes and clean feathers.
Prettiest Bird The winner, will be well kept and have a colourful and interesting plumage.
ALL OTHER PETS Best Kept The pet should be in a clean and suitably sized container and should look well cared for.
Prettiest Unusual Pet Again, the pet must be housed in a clean container and should look 'contented' and healthy. Look for the most unusual pet or the one with the most striking colours to decide of the prize for the prettiest.
