What
is in a name?

A rose by any other name smells as sweet, right? Well, maybe if you're
talking about gardening, but the task of picking the perfect name for
your pet can be a very tricky business.
Some pet owners spend many hours trying to think of the perfect name.
Something clever, descriptive, not confusing for their pet - and that
doesn’t sound silly being called out from the front door.
Interviews conducted on behalf of the Petcare Information Advisory Service
have revealed some of the more individual names given to pets and the
rather peculiar circumstances surrounding these christenings’.
A number of owners have chosen to name their pets after another companion’
which, it is assumed, also brings them a constant source of enjoyment
- alcoholic beverages.
The interviews revealed a Burmese cat named Beaujolaise’ a Persian called
Champagne, a pair of Cocker Spaniels named Rum and Coke’ and a Shitzu
elegantly titled Crème de Cacao.
A sheep dog from Victoria derived his name Rough Red’ not from the colour
of his fur, but from his owners’ penchant for a glass of good, full-bodied
red wine.
Reluctant to be heard calling out "C'mon Shiraz", or "Here
Cabernet Sauvingon" on the farm, let alone in the local park, the
gutsy Red Kelpie dog landed the name Rough Red, which as he ages, seems
to suit him even better!
To help potential and new pet owners find the ideal name for their furry
friends, Petcare Information Advisory Service has compiled a list to
get the creative juices flowing:
Thirst'en' Howl - Who could forget Gilligan's Island?
Kitty-Wan-Kenobi -May the force be with him
Mega Moggie –- For those who believe that size does matter
Napoleon Bonapaws - Variation on the French Emperor
Yorrich - Jester from Shakespeare's Hamlet
Shortnround - Says it all
Deefor - D for Dog, of course
While it can be lots of fun naming a new pet, there is a serious side
to the task. Most experts agree that owners should avoid names that
rhyme with common commands such as "sit" or "stay",
or words like "no" or "bad". This can confuse the
pet and can cause it to think it's being punished every time its name
is called.
Choose a name that is short, simple and easy for the pet to understand.
The best names are those that suit both the pet and its owner. Pets
are such an important part of the family that they deserve appropriate
names. Rough Red’ not only looks the part but also reflects his owners’
sense of humour, as well as their appreciation of a good drop!
