Pets dream of slumber

30 May 2000

Snoozing in the lounge room thatıs the dream for more than a third of Australiaıs cats.

And celebrity vet, Katrina Warren, has found that her new cat, Milly fits the typical pet sleeping profile uncovered by a recent Australian survey.

The Newspoll survey of Australian pet owners found that more than one third of our cats prefer to sleep in the lounge or family room and one in four like to sleep in a bedroom. In contrast, dogs prefer their own bed, although both cats and dogs are not averse to creeping onto their ownerıs bed as well.

The co-star of Harryıs Practice said her new cat Milly sleeps in the lounge or bedroom. "Milly likes to snuggle up with me on the lounge. She often sleeps in the wardrobe amongst my woollen jumpers. In fact, the first time Milly did this I spent an hour looking for her," Katrina said.

Like her well known Border Collie Toby, Aussie dogs prefer their own bed - with 42 per cent snoozing in their kennel or on a dog bed. "Toby sleeps on his orthopaedic dog bed with a lambswool pillow. Occasionally he is allowed on the bed but by invitation only," Katrina said.

According to the survey, the favourite spot for cats to sleep in the lounge or family room is on a chair, couch or sofa where 26 per cent of cats spend most of their time sleeping. Fewer dogs sleep inside than cats, however the ones that do, lounge on chairs, stretch out on sofas, rest on cushions, collapse into bean bags, snuggle into quilts and laze on old mattresses.

For the dogs and cats who choose the great outdoors as their bedroom, popular slumber spots include the verandah, garden, under a bush or tree, by the front or back door on a floor mat.
