The Lost Dogs' Home has operated from its North Melbourne base
since
1914. It was one of Melbourne's first pounds, and its design was
based on
that used by the Battersea Dogs Home, London. (Both our shelter
and the
one in Battersea were known in those days as a 'Temporary Home
for Lost
and Starving Dogs'). Almost all of the holding facilities at the
Lost Dogs
Home conform to the Victorian Code of Practice for Pounds and
Shelters (Minister
for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 1990)
